I am a massive Alan Garner fan, I am sure many will agree he is one of Britain’s greatest writers. He was born in Cheshire in 1934 and by sheer coincidence, I met him a few years ago and have remained in contact since!
Alan writes about people and places in Cheshire, his childhood happened to be spent in Alderley Edge where he can trace his ancestry back 400 years. He was awarded the OBE in 2001, for his services to literature.
A Dream Job!!
I took a call from a lecturer in English Literature from Brookes University asking me if I could organise a tour of some of the settings in Alan’s books!
This was more pleasure than work!
Cheshire and its mythology have had a profound effect on Garner’s writing. His interest in history and archaeology and his own local discoveries have been the seed of many ideas he has worked out in his books.

The tour lasted about 5hrs taking us from Marton Church to Lindow Common Wilmslow, The Edge at Alderley, and then out into hills, Shining Tor, Cat and Fiddle, Shutlingsloe, Goyt Valley and Lud Church at Allgreave.
It was a fantastic way to spend a day driving around the Cheshire countryside, the client was delighted with the tour, not all days can be spent like this but it’s great when we get unusual requests!
